Tragedy of the Guestlist.
Let’s tackle the common misperception that underground promoters make bank. Let’s re-evaluate guestlists: The scene’s number one enemy.....
Lets calculate the average budget of promoter: Act = 1k Venue= $500-1 k(Depends on venue) Flight = $700 (if lucky) Opening acts = $300 Hotel = $250. Those costs roughly = $ 3 250.
And that doesn’t include the posters, the flyers, lasers, visual effects artists, the door staff, meals, cab fares etc. All in all a show in my experience costs at least $3750. And most spaces do not have a maximum capacity that exceeds 200 people.
This means that at $20 cover, break even point is generally set at approximately maximum capacity! And that is if you assume that everyone is paying. Yet despite that, people are always going great lengths to try to get in for free…. I was one of them, but becoming a promoter has changed my perspective. And I hope you change yours.
The fifteen or twenty dollars people complain about, is equivalent the tip a promoter pays when he takes the artist for dinner. It is half the cab fare from the airport to the hotel. That cover, is the smallest price paid by anyone in order to sustain the scene. In that sense, and unless you are supporting in other ways: asking for guest list is quite selfish.
It is almost like telling the promoter: Hey, I know you paid a few thousands dollars for this… but I don’t even want to pay $20.
Most promoters end up losing money. And most local ones are actually in debt. Their problem is not the number of people showing up. Their problem is number of people that don’t support.... It is thus safe to say that the scene’s number one enemy is not ignorance –
