OutliersIceland, this unique audio/visual event at Lincoln Hall features multimedia performances by several cutting-edge electronicMusic Producers Deru With Scenic Shigeto Sweatson Klank Loscil. With dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and a countryside carved out by glaciers, Iceland is a mountainous island of desolate beauty, ancient Viking lore and raw nature: unpolluted and inspiring. In October 2011 with support from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Chicago film collective Scenic traveled to the remote Icelandic countrysideAlongside Photographers Tim Navis Im Holtermand With a goal to create a series of improvised, collaborative short films, the group documented their experiences with the stark landscape, cultural traditions and Icelanders encountered along the way.The resulting full-length documentary - entitled Outliers, Vol. I:Iceland - will be released in June 2012, along with a companion soundtrack compilation featuring thirteen contemporary classical composers and electronic music producers. To celebrate the release, Scenic will join Deru onstage one evening only for a live, multimedia A/V performance inspired by the journey.Soundtrack Contributors Shigeto (Ghostly International) Loscil (Kranky) Sweatson Klank (Alpha Pup) will perform full sets. The first 200 ticket holders who arrive are invited to an exclusive live screening of the film and Q&A session with the artists in advance of the show.DeruDerus music bridges different worlds. Hip-Hop, Electronic, Avant Garde. Back in High School in Chicago, Deru (Benjamin Wynn) had his friends wearing out underground hip-hop mix tapes. The second tape had Slug of Atmosphere rhyming with a borrowed microphone bought just for the session and returned after Those tapes, by the way, are still being played.Since then, Deru has found himself studying music in California (where he now resides) and writing music for TV and even dance. One of his recent projects was a collaboration with a classical composer for the Paris Opera Ballet. This piece was a far cry from hip-hop yet this is his music; a synergy of influences. What this means, in short of course, is that Deru can get both the thinkers and the drinkers on the floor dancing, all in perfect synergy.
